The Caves at Soda Canyon Review: Is it Worth Visiting?
The Caves at Soda Canyon have been on my Napa Valley bucket list for years. Between the dramatic views, underground wine caves, and opportunity to taste wines from a collection of ultra premium wine producers, it always seemed like one of the most unique tasting experiences in Napa Valley.
So when I found out that Napa Native had included it as the final stop on our private Napa Valley wine tour, to say I was excited would be an understatement.
After a full day exploring some of Napa Valley’s incredible wineries, I wondered whether The Caves at Soda Canyon could possibly live up to the hype I’d built up in my head over the years.
I’m happy to report that it absolutely did.
From the moment we arrived, it felt like we had stepped onto the set of a movie. The cave tasting itself was unlike anything I’d experienced elsewhere in Napa, and the panoramic views at the end of the visit somehow managed to make the entire day come full circle.
If you’re wondering whether The Caves at Soda Canyon is worth adding to your Napa Valley itinerary, here’s everything you need to know about my experience visiting.

Visiting The Caves at Soda Canyon With Napa Native
We visited The Caves at Soda Canyon as part of a private wine tour with Napa Native, a locally owned tour company that specializes in creating custom Napa Valley experiences.
One of the things I appreciated most about touring with Napa Native was that the itinerary wasn’t filled with the big-name wineries that everyone visits. Instead, they focused on introducing us to smaller, family-owned wineries and unique experiences that we likely would have never discovered on our own.
The Caves at Soda Canyon was the perfect example of that philosophy. While it had been on my personal Napa Valley bucket list for years, it also ended up being one of the most memorable stops of the entire day.

My Experience at The Caves at Soda Canyon
Carved directly into the hillside and perched high above Napa Valley, The Caves at Soda Canyon feels unlike any other winery I’ve visited before.
As soon as you arrive, you’re welcomed into the property’s famous wine caves, which are also home to an underground custom crush winery. The man-made caves were carved directly into the hill using dynamite and are some of the most impressive wine caves I’ve seen.
The entire tasting took place inside the chilly caves. The cool temperature was a welcome relief on a warm Napa Valley afternoon, while the blankets provided at each seat were such a fun and cozy touch.
We had a little snack plate to share of crackers, cheese, and nuts to enjoy with our tasting.
Our host, Josh, immediately made us feel welcome. The tasting felt relaxed and intimate from the start, more like spending time with friends than attending a formal wine tasting.
As impressive as the caves were, they weren’t my favorite part of the experience. For that, we had to step back outside.

The Breathtaking Views at Caves as Soda Canyon
I’ll admit it—I’m a sucker for a good view, and The Caves at Soda Canyon absolutely delivers.
After our tasting, we walked back through the wine caves toward the terrace. As the large cave doors slowly opened, they revealed one of the most spectacular views in Napa Valley.
Rolling vineyards stretched across the valley floor with mountains rising in the distance. On a clear day, you can even spot San Francisco on the horizon. We spent time soaking in the scenery, taking photos, and finishing the last of our wine while enjoying the peaceful setting.
What made the moment even more memorable was Josh pointing out many of the wineries and vineyards we had visited earlier that day with Napa Native.
It was the perfect ending to a day spent discovering a more authentic side of Napa Valley, and the moment that truly made The Caves at Soda Canyon unforgettable.

Tasting Wines From Napa Valley’s Boutique Producers
One of the best, and most unique, things about The Caves at Soda Canyon is that you’re not just tasting wines from a single winery. Instead, the tasting features a curated selection of wines from several small-production, family-owned wineries, giving you the opportunity to experience a variety of winemaking styles in one visit.
Most of these wineries were completely new to me, which made the tasting even more fun. Rather than sampling wines I could find at larger tasting rooms, I was introduced to family owned boutique producers.
During our tasting, we sampled wines from Buoncristiani Family Winery, Forthright Winery, Greater Fool Wine, Hertelendy Vineyards, and Maxenti. I especially enjoyed comparing two Sauvignon Blancs from different producers side by side—it was fascinating to see how differently they expressed the same varietal.
My favorite wine of the day, though, was the 2021 Hertelendy Cabernet Sauvignon, which was so good it came home with me.
I also thought it was really cool to learn that Napa Native produces its own wines at The Caves at Soda Canyon. After spending the day touring with them, it added another layer to the experience and gave us a behind-the-scenes look at where their wines are made.

Is The Caves at Soda Canyon Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. If you’re looking for one of the most unique wine tasting experiences in Napa Valley, The Caves at Soda Canyon deserves a spot on your itinerary. It’s the kind of winery I’ll continue recommending because it offers the experience many first-time visitors to Napa Valley are hoping to find.
Between the dramatic wine caves, breathtaking views, and opportunity to taste wines from several boutique producers, this is far more than a traditional winery tasting. Every detail felt thoughtfully planned, from the cozy blankets and snack pairing to the intimate atmosphere inside the caves.
If you’re hoping to include a wine cave experience in your Napa Valley itinerary, I honestly think this is one of the best cave tastings I’ve experienced in Napa Valley. The combination of the stunning setting, intimate atmosphere, and thoughtfully curated wines makes it an experience that’s hard to beat.
I also loved how well it fit into our day with Napa Native. Learning that they produce their wines here added another layer to the experience, and ending the day overlooking Napa Valley while reflecting on all the wineries we’d visited made it the perfect finale.
If you’re planning your first trip to Napa Valley, or simply want to experience something beyond the region’s larger, more commercial wineries, you can’t go wrong with The Caves at Soda Canyon.

About The Caves at Soda Canyon
Located in the Stag Leap hills overlooking Napa Valley, The Caves at Soda Canyon is a unique custom crush winery known for its dramatic man-made wine caves and panoramic views.
Unlike a traditional winery, The Caves at Soda Canyon showcases wines from several boutique, family-owned producers, giving guests the opportunity to sample a variety of winemaking styles during a single tasting.
Tastings are a flight of 6 ultra premium small production handcrafted wines for groups 6 people or less. And are by reservation only.
Whether you’re interested in discovering small-production wines or simply looking for one of the most memorable tasting experiences in Napa Valley, The Caves at Soda Canyon offers something truly different.

Planning Your Visit to The Caves at Soda Canyon
If you’re planning to visit The Caves at Soda Canyon, here are a few things to know before you go:
Consider visiting with Napa Native. Since Napa Native produces its wines here, visiting as part of one of their private tours added another layer to the experience and made this stop feel even more special.
Reservations are required. Tastings are by appointment only, so be sure to book in advance.
They do provide a light snack with the tasting, but this is not a winery that allows you to bring a picnic or lunch with you.
Bring a light jacket. Even on warm Napa Valley days, the underground caves stay cool. Blankets are provided during the tasting, but having an extra layer doesn’t hurt, especially if you are visiting during Napa’s chillier months of the year.
Allow time to enjoy the views. Don’t rush off after the tasting—the terrace overlooking Napa Valley is one of the highlights of the entire experience.
