Can You Rely on Uber in Napa Valley: Insider’s Guide & Tips
Yes, you can rely on Uber in Napa Valley… but honestly, it’s not always my top recommendation for getting around wine country. There are a few important things about using rideshares that first-time visitors usually don’t realize.
The biggest thing to know is that while Uber and Lyft work fairly well in Downtown Napa, along the main highway, and throughout most of the valley floor. However, they become much less reliable once you start visiting mountain wineries or more remote areas of Napa Valley.
As a Bay Area local who has visited Napa Valley dozens of times, one of my biggest regrets from my earlier trips was not getting off the valley floor sooner. Some of the most stunning wineries, panoramic views, and memorable tasting experiences are tucked away in the mountains.
So while it’s definitely possible to rely solely on Uber during your trip, if you want to visit mountain wineries or have a more relaxing experience overall, I usually recommend booking a wine tour or private transportation instead. It can make planning your trip feel significantly less stressful, especially if it’s your first time visiting Napa Valley.
One company I often recommend is Napa Native. It’s a local Napa company, and they specialize in curated Napa Valley wine tours and personalized itineraries featuring boutique wineries and hidden gems that many first-time visitors would probably never discover on their own.
And what I really love about them is that they focus on showcasing a more authentic and local side of Napa Valley beyond the typical tourist experience.

How Easy is it to Uber in Napa Valley
First things first: Uber and Lyft are both available in Napa Valley. The closer you are to the southern part of the valley, like downtown Napa, the easier it is to find a ride. As you head further up the valley toward Calistoga, rides become less frequent, and wait times may increase. That said, you can usually still find an Uber without too much trouble.
Tip, if you are staying up valley towards Calistoga and worried getting an Uber at night, make sure to just schedule one so you won’t have to stress about it later.
Like in any major city or town, factors like weather, holidays, and local events can impact both the availability of rides and the cost. On a typical day, though, you can expect wait times of about 5 to 10 minutes in most areas of Napa Valley.
However, there are a few instances where I would not reccomend using Uber or suggest scheduling your ride ahead of time.
🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Before your trip you should be aware of any big events happening in Napa Valley like Bottle Rock over Memorial Day Weekend or Napa’s busiest time of year, Harvest Season, which runs from August through October.
When to Use Uber in Napa Valley
Booking an Uber is a great option for getting to and from lunch or dinner reservations, especially if you’re traveling between any of the Napa Valley’s main towns. I have also had good experiences with using Uber to get to wine tastings as well.
Uber can get you to many incredible wineries, particularly those located on the valley floor along major routes like Highway 29 or Silverado Trail. That said, the farther off the beaten path a winery is, the harder it might be to get a ride.
To make things easier, an option is to schedule your Uber in advance, especially if you’re visiting during a busy weekend between summer and October. Also, be sure to leave plenty of buffer time between wine tastings to account for potential delays.
If you’re planning to visit just one or two wineries in a day, Uber can be a convenient and manageable option.
However, if you’re aiming for a busier itinerary with three tastings (which is my recommended max for a day), you may find yourself pressed for time.
In that case, consider hiring a designated driver, booking a wine tour, or appointing someone in your group as the DD to help the day run more smoothly.
✅ One local company I always recommend is Napa Native because they help you get to your wine tastings safely, but also curate a special and personalized itinerary with boutique wineries and hidden gems throughout Napa Valley.

When NOT to Use Uber
Some of Napa Valley’s most incredible wineries are nestled along the mountainsides, offering breathtaking views of the valley. Such as wineries like Pride Mountain, Barnett Vineyards, and Amizetta Winery. However, if you’re planning to visit these spots, Uber is not an option. In fact, many of these wineries specifically advise against it.
The reason why is the cell service in the mountains is often spotty or nonexistent, and since Uber relies on a strong signal to function, securing a pickup can be nearly impossible. And Uber won’t allow you to schedule a ride to the mountain wineries either, trust me, I’ve tried.
So if you want to skip the transportation stress entirely, Napa Native can handle all the driving and plans for your whole day for you. They even offer really unique wellness and adventure tours that offer a totally different and non-touristy side of Napa Valley.

Do I Reccommend Using Uber in Napa Valley
The reliability of Uber in Napa Valley really depends on the wineries you plan to visit. While it’s an option for getting around, particularly to wineries along main roads, it does come with limitations, especially if you’re hoping to visit mountain wineries or if you are visiting 3 wineries in a day.
And honestly, I don’t always think it’s your best option.
Costs can add up quickly, particularly if you’re traveling with a large group or planning to Uber to and from San Francisco or Oakland airports.
While Uber is generally available, you’ll still need to factor in time spent ordering and waiting for a ride to get from point A to point B.
Punctuality is key when wine tasting in Napa Valley. Most wineries have a strict 15-minute grace period for reservations, especially during busy weekends. If you’re running late and relying on Uber, there’s a risk of your reservation being canceled, which can add unnecessary stress, especially on a packed day of tastings.

What Alternatives to Uber are There in Napa?
Instead of Uber, your other top transportation options in Napa Valley include renting a car and driving yourself, hiring a designated driver, private tour, or booking a small group tour.
One of my favorite group tours is with Glidesdale Adventures, where you get to ride glide bikes, visit 3 boutique wineries, and enjoy a picnic lunch.
While the main towns, like downtown Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga, offer walkable areas filled with restaurants and tasting rooms, you’ll need some form of transportation to reach most wineries outside these hubs.
Public transportation is available via the Napa VINE bus, but it doesn’t drop you directly at the wineries just in the vicinity. Additionally, there’s a shuttle bus that runs from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Napa Valley, but runs on a specific schedule and drop off locations.

Book a Wine Tour or Private Driver in Napa Valley
In my opinion, one of the best ways to experience Napa Valley, especially for a first visit, is by booking a wine tour or private driver. It takes so much of the stress out of planning, navigating, and figuring out transportation throughout the day.
There are many tour companies to choose from, and my recommendations may vary depending on the vibe you are looking for, the size of the group, and your budget. However, a great one to start with is Napa Native because they offer such a wide variety of tours.
And what I love most about them is that they really focus on providing an authentic and memorable experience for you in wine country.
If visiting mountain wineries, hidden gems, or off-the-beaten-path tasting experiences is what you are looking for, booking a wine tour or private transportation can completely change your Napa experience — especially since Uber becomes much less reliable outside of the valley floor.
Sure, private transportation can feel like a splurge at first. But when you factor in the flexibility, personalized planning, local knowledge, and not having to worry about driving after wine tastings, it’s honestly one of the best investments you can make for your trip.
🍷 Want a more authentic Napa Valley experience? I highly recommend Napa Native for curated wine tours, boutique wineries, and personalized itineraries — perfect if you want a stress-free Napa trip.

Itinerary Tips For Planning Your Napa Transportation
Here are some travel guide tips for planning your first trip to Napa Valley:
Rent a Car:
- Ideal for stays longer than a night or two; a car provides flexibility to explore Napa at your own pace and can save money compared to frequent Uber rides.
- Also allows you to explore Napa’s many non-wine-related activities.
Plan a “Busy” Tasting Day:
- Visit multiple wineries (3 max) or explore mountain wineries since Uber cannot pick you up there.
- For this day hire a designated driver or book a private/small group wine tour for convenience and safety.
- Note: Small group tours often have pre-set itineraries, so winery choices may be limited.
Keep Other Days Relaxed:
- Book 1–2 wine tastings per day for a more laid-back experience.
- Use Uber for short trips or drive yourself with a designated driver in your group.
- There are many other things to do besides wine, make time for a spa day, hike, stroll the main downtown areas, and eat some delicious food.
