How To Get To Napa Valley From San Francisco: Easy Guide
Just 58 miles from San Francisco lies the world-renowned Napa Valley, a perfect destination for a day trip or weekend escape to picturesque wine country.
The best part? Getting there is easier than you might think, and you don’t need to rent a car if you don’t want to.
As a Bay Area resident since 2017, I’ve navigated the region’s public transportation like a pro, so you don’t have to.
You can get to downtown Napa from San Francisco via car, shuttle, train, bus, ferry, Uber/Lyft, or private transfer.
In this guide, I’ll share the various ways to travel from San Francisco to Napa Valley, along with my top recommendation for the most convenient journey.
Getting to Napa Valley By Car – Overall Best Option
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: Fastest way to wine country and allows for a flexible itinerary
- Cons: You will need a designated driver to the wineries
Traveling to Napa Valley by car is the quickest and easiest way to get there, making it my top recommendation from San Francisco.
Having a car in Napa is also incredibly convenient, as most wineries and restaurants are spread out. Also, a car gives you the freedom to discover unique things to do in wine country at your own pace.
✅ I highly recommend Discover Cars 🚗 for your Napa trip, it’s my go-to rental site!

🚗 From San Francisco, you have two scenic routes:
- Golden Gate Route: Take Highway 101 North across the Golden Gate Bridge, then follow Highway 37 East and Highway 29 North into Napa.
- Bay Bridge Route: Cross the Bay Bridge to I-80 North, then exit at American Canyon Road West, connecting to Highway 29 North.
🍷 Wine Gal Tip: In need of a DD for your wine tastings? There are companies like Designated Drivers, that will drive your car or rental for you. It is cheaper than booking with a tour company.
Getting to Napa Valley By Tour – Best for Groups
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: You will get a customized tour of Napa from a local expert and will not need a designated driver
- Cons: It can be expensive

If you’d rather skip the stress of renting a car and driving to wine country, a guided tour could be the perfect option for you.
Numerous tour companies offer the convenience of picking you up directly from your San Francisco accommodations or airport and chauffeuring you to your Napa Valley wine tastings.
I have done a wine tour with friends in Napa Valley, and it was one of my most memorable experiences in Napa Valley.
Your tour guide can help you personalize your wine-tasting itinerary, ensuring you experience the best of Napa without the hassle of planning or navigating the roads yourself.
Getting to Napa Valley By Shuttle – Best for Solo Travelers
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: Affordable and convenient
- Cons: Only leaves from SFO, limited drop-off locations, and you must coordinate your flight schedule with their pick-up schedule
Now you can easily catch a shuttle to Napa Valley from San Francisco International Airport! The Wine Country Airporter offers eight daily departures with drop-offs throughout Napa Valley (Yountville, Napa, & American Canyon).
I think, depending on the number of people you are traveling with, this could be a good option for you. If you are a solo traveler (or meeting up with friends in Napa), a one way ticket is around $100 for a one-way ticket, which is less than an Uber ride.
However, if you are traveling as a couple, I think you would spend less getting an Uber, and an Uber ride is more convenient.

Getting to Napa Valley By Uber & Lyft – Most Convenient Option
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: Direct route to your destination
- Cons: It can be expensive, difficult to explore multiple areas once you are there, and limited availability during peak times.
A lot of people ask if Uber and Lyft are available from San Francisco International Airport. The answer is yes, you can get a shared vehicle from the airport or the city to Napa Valley.
Price surges can get crazy out of control in the Bay Area so I highly suggest you book your Uber or Lyft in advance. I would expect to pay at least $120 for a one-way trip.
Also, if you are relying on Uber to get around Napa, it can be done. However, there are certain wineries, especially the ones in the mountains, do not get the best service and ask you not to call an Uber.
Ubers can have limited availability or longer wait times, especially on weekends. If you are planning on using Uber to your wine tastings, I recommend that you book them in advance. You do not want to arrive late for your reservation.
Getting to Napa Valley By Public Transit – Best For Budget Friendly Travelers
- Travel Time: 3+ hours
- Pros: Budget-friendly and certain routes have scenic views
- Cons: Longer travel times, multiple transfers, and inconvenient locations.
Getting to Napa Valley via public transit is possible, but no direct route exists. You will have to take a combination of BART, ferry, train, or bus. It will also take 3+ hours to get to Napa Valley.
🍷 Wine Gal Tip: If you plan on taking public transit while in San Francisco, grab a Clipper Card to get discounts on all Bay Area transit—bus, rail, ferry, and train.

San Francisco to Napa Valley by Ferry & Bus
SF Ferry > Vallejo Ferry > VINE Bus > Soscol Gateway (Downtown Napa)
Take the scenic route and catch the SF Bay Ferry at the San Francisco Ferry Building to Vallejo Ferry Terminal.
From Vallejo, you connect to the Napa Valley VINE bus system Route 11 to Soscol Gateway Transit Center (Downtown Napa).
San Francisco to Napa Valley by Train & Bus
Amtrak Oakland or Emeryville > Martinez Station > Amtrak Bus to Soscol Gateway (Downtown Napa)
There is no Amtrak station in San Francisco, so you will have to travel across the Bay by bus, Uber, BART, or Ferry to catch the Amtrak in Jack London (OAK) or Emeryville (EMY). Take the San Joaquins to the Martinez station.
From there take the Amtrak Bus Route 7 to the Soscol Gateway Transit Center in Downtown Napa.
San Francisco to Napa Valley by BART & Bus
BART Richmond-Millbrae-SFO-northbound (N) line > El Cerrito Del Norte Station > Napa-Bart Bus to Imola Park & Ride (outside of Downtown Napa)
A combination of BART and bus is your cheapest option to get to Napa Valley. ake BART Richmond line to El Cerrito Del Norte. From there, board the Route 29 Napa-Bart express bus to Imola Park which is located right outside of Downtown Napa.
🌟 My Recommendation: Rent a Car to Napa Valley
My final thoughts that I want to leave with you are that there are several ways to reach Napa Valley. If I were traveling solo and meeting friends, I’d opt for an Uber or the shuttle. However, if you’re traveling as a couple or with a group, renting a car is your best bet.
Napa Valley is much larger than most people realize, and having your own transportation allows you the freedom to fully explore all of its hidden gems!
