17 Romantic Things to Do in Napa Valley for Couples
Planning a romantic getaway to Napa Valley doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or overplanned. It’s actually one of the easiest places to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy meaningful time together, especially when you know what’s truly worth doing as a couple.
I personally know this because my husband and I live in the Bay Area and have planned countless spontaneous day trips and romantic weekends in Napa Valley. Over time, we’ve learned which experiences feel genuinely special together and which ones are better skipped if your goal is spending quality time together.
Beyond the iconic vineyard views, Napa Valley offers unforgettable couples’ experiences — from floating over the vineyards on a hot air balloon ride to soaking together in mud baths and hot springs, plus a food scene that you will be dreaming about for years to come.
If you’re planning your first romantic trip to wine country (or returning for a special occasion), this list highlights my favorite romantic things to do in Napa Valley so you can easily put together a memorable, relaxed, and intimate getaway.
🎈 My #1 pick for the most romantic thing to do in Napa Valley is a sunrise hot air balloon ride. Floating quietly over the vineyards as the valley wakes up is pure magic. ✅ Book the Napa Valley Hot Air Balloon Adventure

How to Plan a Romantic Napa Valley Getaway
If this is your first time visiting Napa Valley as a couple, how you plan your days can make all the difference.
My personal favorite time to visit is spring. The valley is absolutely stunning, with blooming wildflowers, vibrant green rolling hills from the winter rain, and crisp mornings that turn into sunny afternoons perfect for wine tasting.
Plan at least three nights, so you have time to enjoy a few tastings, a special dinner, and still leave room to slow down together. I recommend staying in St. Helena or Yountville. Both are centrally located, charming, and walkable — perfect for couples who want boutique hotels, tasting rooms, and restaurants all within easy reach.
And my number one tip? Less is more. Limit yourself to two to three tastings per day and leave space for spontaneity. Napa is at its best when you’re lingering over a glass of wine, not racing to the next reservation.

17 Things to Do in Napa Valley for Couples
Let’s explore the most romantic things to do in Napa Valley, whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a once-in-a-lifetime celebration in wine country.
To make planning easier, this guide is organized by category to help you quickly browse and find the activities that will best fit your itinerary.
🍷 Romantic Wine Experiences

1. Discover Napa With a Private Driver for the Day
One of the most memorable trips my husband and I have had in Napa was the day we hired a private driver.
Having someone else handle the logistics completely changes the experience. You’re not checking GPS, worrying about mountain roads, or stressing about who’s driving. You simply relax, enjoy the scenery, and focus on each other.
It’s also the easiest way to explore hidden-gem wineries and mountain tastings that rideshare services often won’t access.
If your budget allows, this is one of the best ways to make your romantic Napa Valley trip feel seamless and so much more special.
✅ I highly recommend Napa Valley SUV for a private day tour. If you’re looking for something a bit more social and more affordable, Platypus Wine Tours also offers excellent small-group tours.

2. A Private Wine Tasting at a Boutique Winery
Skip the large, high-traffic wineries that run back-to-back group tastings. While they’re well-known for a reason, they can sometimes feel rushed and impersonal, especially if you’re hoping for a more intimate couples experience.
Some of my favorite memories in Napa have come from small, family-owned wineries where the tasting feels more like a conversation than a presentation. The hosts take their time, pour generously, and genuinely want to share their story. You can revisit favorite wines, ask questions, and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
As you’re planning your romantic Napa getaway, prioritize quality over quantity. One thoughtfully chosen boutique tasting will feel far more special than three crowded ones.

3. Plan a Tasting at a Mountain Winery for Incredible Views
Mountain tastings are some of the best Napa wineries for couples looking for an incredible experience and unforgettable views. One of my biggest regrets in past Napa trips is not visiting mountain wineries sooner.
My first tasting on Spring Mountain completely changed how I plan Napa trips. Sitting high above the valley, overlooking rolling vineyards and distant mountains with a glass of Cabernet in hand, felt far more intimate than anything I’d experienced on the valley floor.
Mountain wineries tend to be smaller, quieter, and offer some of the most breathtaking views in Napa Valley. They also produce incredible bold reds, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. And it gives you a more diverse tasting itinerary, instead of just sticking to wineries on the valley floor.
Mountain Wineries with the Most Romantic Views in Napa Valley:
- Barnett Vineyards
- Amizetta Vineyards
- Aonair Winery
- Pride Mountain Vineyards
- Paloma Vineyard
- Sherwin Family Vineyards
🍷 Wine Gal Tip: These locations are remote, and Uber will not pick you up here — you’ll need to drive yourself or plan transportation.

4. Visit During Cabernet Season
Winter in Napa, known as Cabernet Season, is quieter, cozier, and surprisingly romantic.
The harvest crowds are gone, tasting rooms feel more intimate, and many wineries release their newest Cabernet Sauvignon vintages.
It’s also a great time to enjoy fireside tastings and unique seasonal experiences like the winter yurts at Charter Oak.
✅ Unique & Bucket-List Experiences

5. Take a Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Napa Valley
Floating over Napa Valley at sunrise is one of the most iconic and memorable things you can do as a couple.
As the sun rises, the vineyards glow gold and the morning air feels calm and peaceful. It’s quiet, and the views stretch for miles across wine country.
Spring is especially beautiful for this experience, when the valley is lush and green. If a hot air balloon ride has been on your bucket list, Napa is one of the most scenic places to check it off together.
🎈 Check this Napa Valley hot air balloon adventure off your bucket list. The sunrise views over endless vineyards are easily one of the most romantic experiences in wine country. ✅ Book the Napa Valley Hot Air Balloon Adventure
6. Horseback Ride Through a Vineyard
Napa offers many truly amazing experiences, but horseback riding through a vineyard has to be one of the most romantic that I can think of.
Shadybrook Estate Winery offers guided rides across its beautiful property, followed by a curated tasting and charcuterie board while soaking in breathtaking vineyard views. It’s an unforgettable way to experience Napa Valley together.

7. Try a Tasting That Isn’t Wine
While wine is the main attraction, Napa offers plenty of unique tastings that add variety to your itinerary, and sometimes, it’s nice to take a little break from wine for the afternoon.
A really great one is an olive oil tasting at Round Pond Estate, where you can tour their working olive mill, taste fresh oils, and even add on a gourmet experience with food pairings.
Fun & Unique Tastings to Try Out For a Day Date:
- Olive oil tasting at Round Pond Estate
- Macaron & coffee flight at Madeline’s in Yountville
- Ice cream flight at Erosion Tap House
- Beer tasting at Mad Fritz
- Zero-proof tasting tour in downtown Napa
- Grove 45 Olive Oil & Balsamic Tasting
8. Cruise Along the Napa River in a Gondola
If you’re looking for one of the most unique romantic things to do in Napa Valley, a gondola ride along the Napa River feels like stepping into a little slice of Venice, Italy.
The Napa Valley Gondola features authentic Venetian-style boats that glide peacefully through the water. You’ll take in scenic views, spot local wildlife, and learn a bit about Napa’s history from your guide — all while slowing down and enjoying the moment together.
A gondola ride is a beautiful date idea and an especially memorable way to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon, or special occasion in Napa Valley.
🌿 Relaxation & Slow Moments

9. Relax & Unwind at a Napa Valley Spa
Wine country knows how to do relaxation well. Every spa experience I’ve had in Napa has left me feeling completely spoiled and refreshed, it’s the perfect balance to a day of wine tasting.
Napa Valley is home to world-class spas, especially at its luxury resorts like Meadowood and Stanly Ranch. These experiences can be indulgent (and pricey), particularly if you’re not staying on property. Calistoga is also well known for its hot springs and therapeutic mud baths that you can do along with a massage.
That said, you don’t have to splurge on a five-star resort to enjoy a memorable spa day. I’ve also booked a facial at The Meritage Resort and loved it — their spa is set inside a wine cave, and afterward we wandered through their vineyards, making the whole afternoon feel relaxed and romantic.
🍷 Wine Gal Tip: If you are visiting in the summer, book your experience at a resort that also has a pool. Typically you’ll get access to their amenities so after your massage you can cool off and relax by the pool.
10. Book a Mud Bath or Hot Spring Soak for Two
Calistoga is famous for its mineral-rich hot springs and therapeutic mud baths, the perfect way to unwind before (or after) a day of wine tasting.
One of my favorite spots is Golden Haven Spa, which offers a couples mud bath experience, and don’t worry, you each get your own tub.
Many of the hotels will also offer day passes to use their mineral pools and spa amenities. Making it easy to turn a treatment into a full afternoon of relaxation.

11. Do Absolutely Nothing for an Afternoon
I’m a big planner. Most of our trips are carefully mapped out with reservations and activities from morning to night. But some of my favorite moments in Napa Valley with my husband haven’t been scheduled at all.
They’ve been the slow ones, sitting together with a bottle of wine, a few simple snacks, and nowhere else to be.
One of my favorite ways to create that kind of afternoon is stopping by Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co., a charming Italian market tucked away in St. Helena. Pick up fresh olive oils, local cheeses, and cured meats to build your own charcuterie board. Then head back to your hotel, open the bottle of wine you discovered earlier that day, and just enjoy each other’s company.
No agenda. No rushing. Just a quiet moment to soak in your romantic Napa Valley getaway.
🌻 Scenic & Simple Romance

12. Catch a Sunset Together
Sometimes the simplest moments are the most romantic.
After a full day in wine country, pause to watch the sunset together. The valley turns warm and golden, and everything slows down.
Some of my favorite sunset spots:
- Brix Restaurant gardens
- Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar
- Auberge du Soleil patio
- Skyline Wilderness Park
13. Take a Scenic Drive Along Silverado Trail
I love just hopping in the car and driving around wine country. I find it to be so peaceful and refreshing. The Silverado Trail is the perfect scenic drive for a first visit to Napa Valley.
This iconic 26-mile stretch from Napa to Calistoga offers stunning vineyard views and mountain backdrops. Spring and fall are especially beautiful, when the valley is either lush green or glowing with autumn color.

14. Book a Romantic Photo Shoot
This is something my husband are so guilty of not doing when we travel. We come home from an epic vacation and have zero pictures together, besides a couple of obvious selfies. And every time I am kicking myself about not getting more together.
Booking a short couples photo session is a beautiful way to capture your memories, especially if you’re planning a Napa anniversary trip or honeymoon.
With vineyards, golden hills, and charming small towns as your backdrop, your pictures will be absolutely stunning!
Celebrate your Napa honeymoon, anniversary, or getaway with a professional couples photo session. The vineyard backdrops make every shot look magical. ✅ Book a private Napa photo shoot here.
🍽️ Romantic Food & Dining Experiences

15. Enjoy a Romantic Candlelit Dinner
Ok, it doesn’t have to be candlelit to be romantic, but for at least one night of your trip in Napa, you should book dinner at a cozy, quieter restaurant that gives all of the romantic vibes.
Without a doubt, Auberge du Soleil is one of the most romantic restaurants in Napa Valley. Perched above Rutherford, it offers sweeping views of the valley and unforgettable sunsets. Reserve an early dinner to enjoy golden-hour views with your meal.
Other Romantic Restaurants in Napa Valley to Consider:
- Angele
- Charter Oak
- Bistro Don Giovanni
- Bistro Jeanty
- Auro
16. Take a Cooking Class Together
Learning something new together adds a playful and memorable element to any couples trip. A cooking class is a perfect date idea for food lovers or couples who want to bring a little Napa Valley inspiration back into their own kitchen.
Playte Kitchen offers intimate, hands-on classes using some of Napa’s freshest seasonal ingredients. It’s a small local business with excellent reviews, and their classes are known for being welcoming and fun for all skill levels.
It’s also one of those experiences that lasts beyond your trip — especially when you recreate the dish at home later and reminisce about your time in Napa.
17. Enjoy Live Music & Nightcap
So one thing Napa is not known for is its nightlife. You’ll quickly notice that people usually grab dinner on the earlier side and things start to wind down after that.
However, if you are looking for something fun to do post dinner, downtown Napa is the place to be.
JaM Cellars hosts live music on weekends, Sky & Vine is perfect for rooftop cocktails, and Cadet Wine + Beer Bar is a favorite local hangout.
