How to Reach Napa Valley from Sacramento: What You Need to Know
When planning your trip from Sacramento to Napa Valley, don’t forget to think about how you’ll get around Napa.
Options like Uber (limited to some wineries), driving yourself, a private driver, or a small group tour are all popular choices.
I highly recommend booking a private driver for at least one day of your Napa itinerary. It’s an unforgettable way to experience wine country! You can taste more wine, explore with an expert guide, and enjoy the peace of mind of not worrying about drinking and driving.
Keep this in mind when deciding on how to travel from Sacramento to Napa, as it can help shape your budget, travel time, and overall experience.

1. Sacramento to Napa Valley By Car – Overall Best Option
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: Fastest way to wine country and allows for a flexible itinerary
- Cons: Cost & you will need a designated driver, uber or private driver to the wineries
The easiest and most convenient way to get to Napa Valley from Sacramento is by renting a car and driving. It’s not only a means of getting there, a car allows for you to explore and see more of the region at your own pace.
Napa Valley spans 30 miles and consists of five main towns, meaning it takes at least 40 minutes to drive from one end to the other. While downtown areas are walkable, many wineries and some restaurants are more spread out, making a car essential for getting around.
Sacramento International Airport has a rental car terminal at the airport, but you need to take a shuttle from your terminal to get there.
Pro tip: You can hire a Designated Driver to drive your rental car to your wine tastings! It’s also more affordable than booking a private driver with a tour company.
✅ I highly recommend Discover Cars 🚗 for your Napa trip, it’s my go-to rental site!
Fastest & Easiest Route (via I-80 & CA-12)
- From Sacramento International Airport, take I-5 N briefly, then switch to CA-113 S toward Davis.
- Merge onto I-80 W for 30 miles, then take CA-12 W toward Napa.
- Continue on CA-29 N into downtown Napa

2. Getting to Napa Valley By Tour – Best For Day Trips
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: You will get a customized tour of Napa from a expert and will not need a designated driver
- Cons: It can be expensive
If you are looking to just spend the day in Napa Valley from Sacramento, than booking a tour might be the best option for you.
They take care of all of the planning, booking tastings, and transportation for you. And will help you curate the best wine tasting itinerary.
A tour is also the perfect way to get to Napa if you are traveling in a group or celebrating a special occasion. I booked a tour for 15 people for my husband’s birthday. It was a blast and one of our most memorable times in Napa Valley

3. Getting to Napa Valley By Uber & Lyft – Most Convenient Option
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: Direct route to your destination, comfortable, and no need to drive to wineries, traveling solo
- Cons: It can be expensive, difficult to explore multiple areas once you are there, and limited availability during peak times.
For a convenient and comfortable way to get to transport from Sacramento to Napa Valley is by taking an Uber. You can expect to pay at least $113 for the Uber ride. There are plenty available and you should have no issue finding one to take you back to Sacramento, I just recommend you book your ride in advance.
However, the downside to relying on Uber in Napa Valley, is that not all wineries are accessible by shared cars. You will be fine getting around on the valley floor but, Uber will not pick you up from the mountain wineries like Barnett Vineyards or Amizetta. Trust me, I have tried!
Also, requesting multiple Uber rides throughout the day can quickly add up, especially if you’re traveling with a group. In most cases, renting a car will cost less.
It might be worth spending a little more to book a tour or car service for the day, allowing you to relax and not worry about getting to your wine tastings on time.
🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Relying on Uber in Napa? Be sure to check the local events calendar before your trip—major events like BottleRock, summer concerts, and harvest season can make rideshare availability tricky (and prices surge!). Plan ahead so you’re not left waiting.

4. Getting to Napa Valley By Car Service or Shuttle – Best For Groups
- Travel Time: 1.5 to 2 hours to Napa Valley
- Pros: Direct route to your destination, conveient and comfortable, and no need to drive & navigate traffic.
- Cons: It’s expensive, you do not have a car when you get there and will need to Uber or book a private driver
Planning a bachelorette party or a birthday celebration with a group friends, then booking a car service or shuttle can be the best option for you.
There’s no waiting around for a car rental or Uber ride, your private car or shuttle will arrive at the airport and take your group directly to your Napa destination.
There are so many Napa car services out there, I have found that this company offers a good quote, especially when splitting the cost. But I recommend pricing out a few first before booking.

5. Getting to Napa Valley By Public Transit – Most Affordable Option
- Travel Time: 3+ hours (with wait between transfers)
- Pros: Budget-friendly
- Cons: Longer travel times, multiple transfers, limited schedules, and inconvenient locations.
If you are on a budget, public transit offers a more affordable way to get from Sacramento to Napa Valley. Unfortunately, there is no direct route to Napa Valley by public transportation, and you will need to make multiple transfers.
Also, it can take double the time to get there, but it is doable. Here is a step by step guide to getting to Napa by train and bus.
If you are looking for more ways to save $$ in Napa, then I highly recommend the Priority Wine pass. It gets you loads of discounts at the wineries, especially with their infamous 2 for 1 tasting (so that means you only need one pass for a couple).
Also, you can get discounts on hotels in downtown Napa and fun experiences like Napa’s hot air balloon ride.
