Best Area to Stay in Napa Valley: Guide to 5 Main Towns

Napa Valley is a one-of-a-kind destination, home to five unique towns offering everything from charming B&Bs and boutique hotels to luxurious resorts and private rentals. With so many options, choosing where to stay can feel overwhelming.

Don’t worry, I’m here to help you find the best area to stay in Napa Valley!

As a Bay Area local since 2017 and a lover of all things Napa Valley, I’ve spent years exploring this incredible region, researching, and uncovering the best places to stay. My top pick? Yountville, it’s Napa Valley at its finest. This upscale, centrally located town is the culinary capital of the region.

That said, the best area for your stay depends on the experience you want, each town offers something unique, whether it’s a laid-back vibe, nightlife, budget friendly accommodations, proximity to wineries, or pure luxury.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through Napa Valley’s five distinct towns and help you choose the perfect spot for your wine country getaway. Here are my top recommendations for the best places to stay in Napa Valley!

What You Need To Know Before Booking Your Stay

If it’s your first time visiting Napa Valley, don’t feel pressured into booking the ultra luxurious resort. There are a lot of those in Napa, and the prices are extremely overwhelming.

Most of your trip will be spent outside of your hotel room, so book a hotel that is in your budget and splurge on something unique like a private driver for the day, a hot air balloon ride, or a food and wine pairing experience.

Napa

The city of Napa is a popular choice for first time visitors to Napa Valley, it has a lot more energy and things to do than the other towns. You’ll love it because it is very walkable and there are tons of restaurants, cafes, boutique shops, and tasting rooms.

Another advantage of staying in Napa is the more affordable accommodation options, with inns and B&Bs often offering better rates than those in St. Helena, Yountville, and Calistoga.

If you’re looking for a bit of nightlife, Napa is your best bet. By wine country standards, many places stay open later than the rest of the valley.

I will say a con of staying in Napa is the location. It’s not as central as the other towns like St. Helena and Yountville, so expect a bit more driving to some wineries. Also, it can feel a little more touristy compared to the other towns.

Best Places to Stay in Napa

  • 🏆 Archer Hotel Napa Valley: Situated in the heart of downtown Napa, this upscale boutique hotel boasts a stunning rooftop that has a spa, a bar with small bites, and a unique water deck for lounging.
  • Andaz Napa: A boutique hotel nestled in the heart of downtown Napa, offering modern rooms with cozy fireplaces and a to die for deep soaking tub.
  • The Meritage Resort and Spa: I’ve stayed here before with friends, and we enjoyed our experience. Set on a nine-acre vineyard, The Meritage offers an outdoor pool, bowling lounge, multiple restaurants, a winter ice rink, and a free shuttle to downtown Napa, just 10 minutes away. Perfect for families or groups.
  • Hotel Napa Valley: I made reservations for my mother to stay her and she loved it, and you can’t beat the price. Breakfast is included, there is a basket of snacks and fresh baked cookies out daily. The rooms are small but very quaint, and it’s about a 10-15 minute walk from downtown.

Things to Do in Napa

Napa is my favorite town to visit and we always make a stop in downtown whenever we can.

Some of the must things to do are to eat and shop at the Oxbow Market, Kayak along the Napa River, catch live music at Blue Note and JaM Cellars, or stroll the Napa ArtWalk, an outdoor exhibition of scupltures.

Wineries to Visit in Napa

Downtown Napa has over 20 tasting rooms, many that stay open later than the wineries.

Nearby wineries that I would recommend are Palmaz Vineyards, Fontanella, Porter Family Vineyards, Trefethen Family Vineyards for white wine, Black Stallion Winery, and Domaine Carneros for sparkling wine.

Where to Eat in Napa

Stop at Fatted Calf for premium meats, Model Bakery for the best English muffins you will ever have, and Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar & Restaurant at Archer Hotel for drinks and a bite to eat.

Top spots for dinner are Scala Osteria & Bar, TORC, Zuzu’s, Angele, Bistro Don Giovanni, Coles Steakhouse for a special occasion, and Grace’s Table is a must for breakfast.

Yountville

Yountville is the ideal destination for the foodie, art enthusiast, and anyone seeking a relaxing getaway with a low-key nightlife.

This picturesque town seamlessly blends luxury with small-town charm. Nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, it’s the perfect homebase for exploring.

What makes Yountville truly special is, it’s a foodie’s paradise! Boasting the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world, this culinary haven is home to iconic dining spots like Thomas Keller’s legendary The French Laundry, alongside numerous other incredible restaurants.

That said, Yountville’s luxury comes at a cost. It’s one of the priciest towns to stay in Napa Valley, and budget-friendly options are pretty limited.

North Block Hotel

Best Places to Stay in Yountville

  • 🏆 North Block Hotel: A trendy boutique hotel located a short stroll from downtown Yountville. The North Block offers superior service, an excellent restaurant, and has received two Michelin Keys 🗝️
  • Napa Valley Lodge: A stunning Tuscan-inspired boutique hotel surrounded by vineyards and beautiful gardens. You’ll be steps away from downtown but also tucked away in your own private sanctuary.
  • Bardessono Hotel & Spa: Escape to the tranquil oasis of Bardessono Hotel & Spa, where luxury meets sustainability. Indulge in lavish amenities, including a rooftop pool, a world-class spa, and the refreshing outdoor showers.
  • Maison Fleurie: A charming French Country B&B in downtown Yountville, this gem offers beautiful gardens, complimentary bikes, a daily breakfast for two, freshly baked cookies, and the ultimate treat, an afternoon wine and cheese happy hour that’s not to be missed.

Things to Do in Yountville

Make the most of Yountville’s food scene by indulging in delicious pastries from Bouchon Bakery and the famous English muffins at Model Bakery. Enjoy a charming lunch at Bistro Jeanty, and if your budget allows, try securing a coveted reservation at The French Laundry for an unforgettable experience.

After your belly is full stroll downtown for some shopping and admiring the art galleries. A must is The Yountville Art Walk and Audio Tour, which is a beautiful collection of outdoor sculptures from local and world renowned artists.

Also, if you are feeling adventurous another great thing to do in Yountville is to soar above the vineyards in a sunrise hot air balloon ride.

Wineries to Visit in Yountville

There are a few wonderful tasting rooms in Yountville, you can do a potato chip pairing at Silver Trident or you can’t go wrong with a BACON pairing at Priest Ranch.

Other wineries in Yountville that I recommend are Cliff Lede Vineyards, Goosecross Cellars, Stewart Cellars tasting (my husband and I were members there for some time), Handwritten Wines tasting room, and Domaine Chandon for bubbles.

Where to Eat in Yountville

There are so many exceptional restaurants to choose from but a couple of favorites are Bottega, Bistro Jeanty, Mustards Grill, Cicco, and of course, The French Laundry.

St. Helena

This charming wine country town offers a quiet and relaxing stay in the heart of Napa Valley. You can find lodging downtown and be footsteps from fabulous restaurants and shops or stay minutes out of town and be surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards and towering redwood trees.

Rich in history, St. Helena is home to landmark wineries like Charles Krug Winery, the oldest in Napa Valley.

However, St. Helena may not be the right fit if you’re seeking nightlife, as the town has a low key vibe. It’s also a bit pricier than other towns, and with its location along Highway 29, traffic can back up, especially during weekends or peak seasons.

Harvest Inn

Best Places to Stay in St. Helena

  • 🏆 Harvest Inn: Located in a prime location right outside of downtown. The fairytale property features a gorgeous botanical garden, enchanting redwood groves, and sweeping vineyards. A must is to reserve a vineyard room when staying at the Harvest Inn.
  • Meadowood Napa Valley: The ultimate luxury getaway nestled in a serene forest in St. Helena forest. This 250-acre estate offers an intimate and exclusive wine country retreat. Recognized as one of the best 5-star hotels in the U.S., it’s one of the few to receive five-star accolades for both its hotel and spa.
  • Rancho Caymus Inn: Located a short drive from St. Helena in Rutherford, the Ranch Caymus Inn is a historic luxury boutique hotel. Your stay here will include numerous extra amenities like complimentary wine tastings and access to exclusive perks at many wineries. Awarded one Michelin Key 🗝️
  • The Alila: An exclusive, adults-only resort tucked away amidst scenic vineyards, just minutes from downtown St. Helena. Enjoy a glass of wine from your private balcony while taking in sweeping vineyard views, or unwind by your outdoor firepit under the stars.
  • El Bonita Motel: Great for a budget friendly stay in Napa Valley, located outside of downtown St. Helena. No frills, but it’s a family owned motel that offers a comfortable stay in a prime location of wine country.

Things To Do in St. Helena

Take a leisurely stroll down Main Street in downtown St. Helena, where you can explore charming boutique shops, art galleries, and indulge in Model Bakery’s famous English muffins—a must-try!

While you’re in the heart of town, don’t miss the chance to catch a film at Cameo Cinema, California’s oldest continuously operated single-screen movie theater.

And if you are looking for something unique to do, take a short drive to Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co. This hidden gem brings Italian flavors to wine country with its infused olive oils, freshly baked breads, salami, pasta, and prosciutto, that come directly from Italy.

Wineries to Visit in St. Helena

I love wine tasting in St. Helena, it is home to so many of my favorite wineries, AXR and Barnett Vineyards. Nearby, you’ll find other top-notch wineries like Pride Mountain Vineyards, Aonair Wine, Amizetta Winery, and Louis M. Martini Winery.

Where to Eat in St. Helena

Many recognize Yountville as the foodie capital of Napa Valley. However, don’t sleep on St. Helena. There are so many fantastic restaurants to dine here at as well.

A couple of fan favorites are Charter Oak, Brasswood, Cook, and Farmstead. And for the best cocktails, check out Goose & Gander.

Calistoga

I absolutely love Calistoga for its laid-back, less touristy vibe compared to other Napa towns. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for more than just wineries and wine tasting.

Many of the resorts offer relaxing geothermal mineral baths and volcanic ash mud treatments, perfect for unwinding. Downtown is also super walkable, with charming boutique shops, spas, restaurants, and tasting rooms.

The only downside is that Calistoga is a bit more remote, being the northernmost town in Napa Valley and the furthest from San Francisco. You tend to do a lot more driving when you are staying here.

Best Places to Stay in Calistoga

  • 🏆 Indian Springs Calistoga: A bohemian oasis just a 10-minute walk from downtown Calistoga. Unwind with a soak in its iconic Olympic-sized mineral hot springs or indulge in a rejuvenating spa day. Plus, with its tons of activities and amenities, it’s a great spot for families.
  • Four Seasons Napa Valley: The perfect romantic stay in luxury. The Four Seasons is a secluded 5 star resort surrounded by picturesque vineyards. It is home to a Michelin-starred restaurant, Auro, and a holistic spa.
  • Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection: A stunning resort known for its spacious cottages with private patios. The resort offers many lavish amenities like Michelin guided restaurant, a personal peloton, large pool, and guests get acess to the lovely spa.
  • Inn on Pine: Offers an affordable and charming stay for your Napa Valley getaway. This quaint hotel features a pool, outdoor hot tub with mountain views, and cozy rooms with fireplaces. Relax with a glass of wine on the deck or enjoy a complimentary breakfast in the covered courtyard.

Things to Do in Calistoga

Plan a day of R&R with a spa day at one of Calistoga’s renowned hot springs, hike the Oat Hill Mine Trail that offers sweeping views of the valley, or take a short drive to the Old Faithful Geyser.

Wineries to Visit in Calistoga

Castello di Amoroso is a popular winery to visit, it is the famous castle winery. Also, Sterling Vineyards is another well known for its Gondola.

Other wineries I suggest are Frank Family Vineyards, Davis Estates, Tank Garage Winery, and Schramsberg Vineyards for the best cave tour and sparkling wine.

Where to Eat in Calistoga

Calistoga also has numerous wonderful dining options from Michelin-starred to casual spots. A couple that I recommend are Auro, Solbar, Lovina, Sam’s Social Club, Evangeline, and the local favorite, The Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery.

American Canyon

Located at at the southern tip of Napa Valley, American Canyon is the lesser known town in wine country.

One of the main perks of staying here is its budget-friendly accommodations, making it a great option for families or anyone passing through on a short stay or road trip.

However, if you’re planning to explore the central Napa Valley, I wouldn’t recommend staying here. It’s a bit of a drive from many of the wineries and restaurants, so while it may be affordable, you’ll likely spend more time in the car, which may not be ideal for everyone.

Best Places to Stay in American Canyon

In American Canyon you will mostly find chain hotels like DoubleTree, Fairfield Inn and Suites, and Holiday Inn Express.

Things to Do in American Canyon

Get some fresh air, there are numerous parks and the American Canyon Wetlands to explore. Or play a round of golf at Chardonay Gold Club.

Wineries to Visit in American Canyon

If you are staying in American Canyon, I suggest looking at the wineries I recommended near the city of Napa, they will be the closest ones to you.

Where to Eat in American Canyon

There are a couple of true hidden gems in American Canyon. LASO is a Nepalese fusion spot, La Strada for comfort Italian food, and Le Paris for yummy pastries.

Vacation Rentals in Napa Valley

If you’re traveling with a group, Napa Valley and Sonoma have some truly spectacular vacation rentals that can make your trip to wine country extra special.

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Book your Airbnb or VRBO as soon as possible! Due to Napa County’s strict regulations on vacation rentals, availability is limited, and the houses go fast.

For my husband’s birthday, I planned a getaway with friends and booked a stunning home in Healdsburg, Sonoma. The property sat on a vineyard, featured a private pool and hot tub, and even had a separate guest house, it made for an unforgettable stay.

If you want to be closer to Napa Valley, you can also find incredible vacation homes in Calistoga and St. Helena, and some condos in downtown Napa.
