10 Best St. Helena Restaurants You Can’t Miss in Napa Valley

St. Helena may just be Napa Valley’s best-kept culinary secret. Sure, Yountville might steal the spotlight as the famed foodie town, but trust me when I say, some of the best meals in wine country are tucked away in this charming corner of Napa.

This small town packs a huge culinary punch from the French Laundry alum head chef and owner at Charlie’s, to the most mouthwatering cheeseburger in town at Charter Oak, or the best off menu appetizer at Brasswood.

With so many phenomenal choices, honestly the real hard part is deciding on just one or two restaurants to book for your next Napa trip. But don’t worry I’m here to help!

I live an hour outside of wine country and have been exploring and eating my way through the valley as a traveler just like you for years now.

So if you are looking for the the kind of meal you’ll be dreaming about on your flight home, let’s dig into my guide to the best St. Helena restaurants.

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Choose to stay in St. Helena if you want a quiet & relaxing stay in the heart of wine country. It is also home to so many iconic and small family owned wineries.

The brick entrance and manicured landscape outside of The Charter Oak

1. Charter Oak

📍1050 Charter Oak Ave, St. Helena, CA 94574 ⭐ Michelin Recommended

Charter Oak is one of my favorite restaurants in Napa Valley, everything is absolutely delicious! It’s a family-style spot with a casual, inviting ambiance that still feels upscale. All of their dishes are made with fresh, seasonal ingredients from their local 3.5-acre farm.

The burger from Charter Oak is out of this world amazing and a must-try! Pro Tip: get their Fermented soy dip (the greatest dip of all time) on the side for your fries. You’ll thank me later.

If you’re visiting in the summer, grab a table in their picturesque courtyard, it looks like something out of a fairytale (and yes, it’s dog-friendly!). And in the winter, the space transforms into a cozy yurt village, offering a unique and intimate dining experience.

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Charter Oak is great for dinner or for lunch between tastings. They also have numerous vegetarian options.

2. Charlie’s Napa Valley

📍Address: 1327 Railroad Ave, St Helena, CA 94574

Situated in the heart of downtown St. Helena, Charlie’s has quickly become the local hangout everyone’s buzzing about. With its laid-back vibe and friendly atmosphere, it’s the kind of spot where you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.

And the food is downright delicious, featuring locally sourced ingredients. The owner and chef is Elliot Bell, a French Laundry alum with experience in some of the world’s most prestigious kitchens.

Also, Charlie’s has a solid happy hour and is the only restaurant in St. Helena that offers a late-night menu that goes until 11 pm.

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Charlie’s is perfect for a late-night dinner and drinks. Also if you are gluten-free, they can make gluten-free modifications to most dishes.

Farmstead restaurant at Long Meadow Ranch

3. Farmstead

📍Address: 738 Main Street St. Helena, CA 94574 ⭐ Michelin Recommended

Another restaurant you can’t miss in St. Helena is the wonderful Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch. It is a true farm-to-table restaurant where everything on your plate comes straight from their ranch, vineyards, or gardens, or is locally sourced.

Located in the heart of St Helena, the property is an absolute dream with lush greenery, beautiful gardens, and vineyard views.

While eating here, don’t miss out on ordering the warm and fluffy cheddar biscuits served with honey butter. So yummy!

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Farmstead is perfect for dinner, lunch in between wine tastings, or a Sunday brunch. Also a great family-friendly option, they are kid and dog friendly.

The elegant exterior of Brasswood Bar + Kitchen

4. Brasswood Bar + Kitchen

📍Address: 3111 St Helena Hwy, St. Helena, CA 94574

If you’re looking for the perfect stop for a sit down lunch in between your wine tastings make it Brasswood.

You won’t find it on their menu but Brasswood is famously known for its not so secret mozzarella appetizer. It’s warm stretched mozzarella that is made to order. And it is to die for! Also, save room for dessert and try their praised butterscotch panna cotta.

Make sure to save time to walk the property, it is absolutely stunning. You can also schedule a tasting at Brasswood Cellars. They offer numerous unique experiences including their sensory tasting!

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Brasswood is the favorite lunch spot in St Helena, but they also serve dinner and have an artisan bakery you can pop in for a quick bite.

5. Goose & Gander

📍Address: 1245 Spring Street, St. Helena, CA 94574

If you’re visiting St. Helena, a stop at Goose & Gander for drinks and a bite to eat is a must!

Tucked away off of Main Street, Goose & Gander resides in a historic house from the early 19th century. The inside is very charming and cozy in their pub like dining room. Downstairs is a bar that gives off speakeasy vibes and outside is a beautiful patio and gardens.

I suggest sharing a bunch of appetizers for the table – the sticky pig ears, duck fat fries, and milk bread are all delicious. And you can’t forget the mushroom soup, it is the best you will ever have.

Goose & Gander is also the go-to spot for pre or post dinner drinks. They serve some of the best cocktails in the Valley, the Cucumber Collins is a favorite!

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Goose & Gander serves American Rustic food. This spot is perfect for a romantic date night or drinks and dinner with friends.

6. Violetto

📍Address: 1915 Main St, St Helena, CA 94574

Formerly known as Acacia House, Violetto is the new must-visit restaurant in St. Helena, bringing a fresh take on Northern Italian fine dining to the stunning Alila Napa Valley Hotel.

What I love most about Violetto is the range of dining experiences they offer. You can savor their thoughtfully curated prix fixe tasting menus in the elegant main dining room (they also have a full vegetarian prix fixe option as well).

Or if you’re in the mood for something more casual, head to the lounge or veranda and choose from their a la carte menu of sharable plates.

And for margarita fans, don’t worry, Violetto still serves the iconic Acacia House margarita, arguably the best in wine country.

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Violetto offers upscale dining with Italian-French influence cuisine, and is a great option for vegetarians and vegans.

7. Pizzeria Tra Vigne

📍Address: 1016 Main St, St Helena, CA 94574

If you’re looking for something casual and the best pizza in town, Pizzeria Tra Vigne is the spot for you.

Enjoy yummy sourdough pizzas cooked to perfection in their wood-fired oven. However, what will keep you coming back to Pizzeria Tra Vigne again and again is their Mozzarella “al Minuto.”

Hand-pulled fresh mozzarella served on a garlic crostini and topped with drizzled olive oil. So creamy and delicious!

🍷 Wine Gal Tip: 🍷 Wine Gal Tip: Pizzeria Tra Vigne is great for casual bites with a group of friends or family (they accept large parties). They are kid friendly and have a dog-friendly patio.

The charming outside of Cook St. Helena

There’s nothing like fresh pasta after a day of wine tasting. Located in downtown St Helena along Main Street, Cook St Helena has been a Napa Valley staple since 2004.

This local gem is known for its cozy atmosphere and mouthwatering Northern Italian cuisine. Everything is made fresh and in house including their everchanging risotto of the day.

10. Gatehouse CIA

📍Address: 2555 Main St, St Helena, CA 94574

  • If you are not staying in downtown or visiting a restaurant outside of town, you can use Uber (there are plenty available on of the valley floor).
